AKG C 542 BL Boundary Layer Microphone for Studio Recording, Theater and Live audio

Small and unobtrusive, light-weight but robust, ease of setup for quick results, high sensitivity and low self-noise for trouble-free operation, that all describes AKG's new C 542 BL Microphone. Recording a grand piano with the C 542 BL, it's possible.

AKG Acoustics presents a new small boundary microphone for theater, studio, and installed sound applications, etc. The new microphone has been designed to be visually unobtrusive, yet strong enough to be used on stage. With its non-reflective surface finish, the C 542 BL almost disappears when placed on the stage floor or lecterns, conference and announcer's tables, etc.

The switchable bass filter helps to reduce rumbling or wind noise as well. The slope of the filter is 12 dB/octave with a corner frequency of 150 Hz.

The C 542 BL works on the “Boundary Layer” principle with the capsule element mounted in the surface area of a boundary (plate) in such a way that the front of the microphone is facing the sound source and is practically flush with the acoustically reflective surface of the boundary. This method minimizes the comb-filter or interference effects, which is heard as uneven frequency response with an increasing high frequency rise, that usually happens when microphones are placed near reflecting surfaces.

The polar response of this microphone is basically omni-directional in front of the plate (i.e. hemispherical), which means, the microphone is only sensitive from the front of the used boundary area. The sensitivity is, compared to conventional omni-directional microphones of this size, 6 dB higher when mounted on large, acoustically-reflecting surfaces (wood or tile floors, solid walls and ceilings, large areas on instruments, etc.) This increase in sensitivity improves the dynamic range and lowers the self-noise of the microphone by the same amount.

The omni-directional (pressure) transducer used in this microphone is inherently insensitive to vibrational noise and much less susceptible to wind noise. The rubber feet on the microphone in conjunction with the adhesive material enclosed will also reduce residual noise from the structural vibrations of walls or floors.

The output of the microphone is of low impedance and electronically balanced for accepting phantom power and can be used with balanced or unbalanced amplifier inputs provided an AKG power supply (like the B 18) is used to provide adequate phantom power.

Applications

The biggest advantages of this type of microphone are simple placement and unobtrusiveness in appearance.

1. The simplest placement for general recording situations would be on the floor (no carpets!) about 2 to 10 m (6 to 30 ft.) away from the sound source. The actual distance will depend largely on the size of the sound source to be recorded and the acoustical properties of the room or studio.

2. Another placement method would be to use a nearby wall (without tapestry or curtains!) as the boundary surface. For this purpose, the wall must be flat and reasonably reflective. The microphone plate has three holes for permanent mounting to the wall, ceiling or floor. We suggest leaving the rubber feet in the holes to suppress any vibrational noise from the boundary surface.

3. Because of the small dimensions of the microphone, direct attachment to parts of large instruments such as lids of pianos, upright pianos, harpsichords or similar instruments is also recommended.

4. The microphone may also be placed on tables to record round-table conferences or on pulpits and altars in churches.

5. The hemispherical polar pattern may lead to unwanted pick up of sound in some special cases. The only way to improve the recording would be to turn the microphone together with the boundary surface away from the unwanted and interfering sound sources. Engineers often use clear plexiglass panels of suitable size (1m x 1m or 3 x 3 ft.) or use thick carpet materials shadowing one side of the microphone for more directional control.
