DJs look at MIDI Controller Mixer Xone:3D from Allen & Heath
Top DJ mixer manufacturer, Allen & Heath, hosted a party to celebrate the launch of its pioneering MIDI controller/mixer - the Xone:3D. The event, supported by Traktor creators Native Instruments, was held at leading nightclub, Fabric, and comprised comprehensive demos from Ralph Lawson (2020 Soundsystem) who uses Ableton Live 5, and Chris Liebing & Speedy J who both use Traktor DJ Studio.
DJs, retailers, press, and select Xone and Traktor users, were given a step-by-step explanation of how to construct a DJ set with the 3D, introducing clips and samples from the software - mapped to any of the 3D's 86 MIDI controls, which are in the form of faders, knobs and jog wheels - and syncing other music sources via the 3D's USB soundcard.
Guests were also treated to two 2-hour live sets from the demo DJ's and a warm up set by London-based Alt*Ctrl, where the full potential of the revolutionary new mixer was revealed.
"The Xone:3D's what I've been waiting for - for three years!" comments Ralph Lawson, who has been using Ableton Live in his DJ sets since 2004. "I've got the mixer as my performance workstation, and the computer purely as a reference on the side. You don't want to be sitting looking at a computer screen onstage - it's not how music should be performed!"
The Xone:3D is the amalgamation of a high performance DJ mixer, top spec multi-channel USB soundcard, and comprehensive MIDI control surface, offering an integrated performance workstation. With just one USB cable, DJ's can create DJ and live sets, with comprehensive and flexible control over any software. An automatic beat detector synchronises the MIDI clock, or can be disabled to allow the beat to be manually tapped-in.
Early adopters include Ralph Lawson, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, Richie Hawtin, Paul van Dyk, Hernan Cattaneo, Pete Tong, Richard Devine, Fergie, and Fabric nightclub.
Allen & Heath are planning to hold 3D demos/workshops across the UK in the coming months.
