Composer Paul Haslinger Scores with Steinberg
Los Angeles, CA - Paul Haslinger, a long-time Cubase expert user, has recently completed composition for two upcoming films, both anticipated to be major box office releases: "crazy/beautiful" and "Behind Enemy Lines".
Paul Haslinger, born in Austria, now a Los Angeleno, is a classically trained musician who explores the creative application of computers to music and other media. A member of Tangerine Dream from 1986 to 1990, he turned to film composition in the 90's, collaborating with Graeme Revell. His recent film work includes "Red Planet" and "Blow". Today, Haslinger applies Cubase, Recycle, HALion, Wavelab, Nuendo and Midex8 to his own film projects. On both projects, Haslinger made much use of REX (ReCycle Export files) within Cubase. He also used Cubase to integrate 16 and 24 bit source files, as well as Wav, SDII and AIFF source material. His preferred plug-ins for these scores include Chopper and ModDelay.
A Touchstone/Disney release, "crazy/beautiful" stars Kirsten Dunst and Jay Hernandez in a contemporary love story set at Pacific Palisades High School. "The score needed to be hip and current, yet also support the action on screen as well as the emotional curve. Everything was written and arranged within Cubase. Once the cues were approved, I added live guitars and a small string section" said Haslinger.
"Behind Enemy Lines", a 20th Century Fox film due in October, is an action thriller set in modern-day Bosnia. Starring Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson, it is essentially a tension filled war movie. Comments Haslinger, "The score combines traditional war movie music with current up-to-date structures and sound, including loops. The score will be developed and arranged in Cubase. Due to the nature of the film, much of the material is rhythmic, where REX files (specifically REX2 stereo files) will play an important role.
Haslinger relies heavily on Cubase in his compositions, calling it "the most powerful creative music tool out there at the moment". When faced with the reality of last minute film changes, he particularly appreciates the flexibility of REX files, which allow him to easily accommodate changes in timing. Says Haslinger, "After the cue is written and approved, the film is often changed. To accommodate these changes, it is very important to be able to modify tempo structures in adjustable increments. REX files are great during the writing phase, allowing experimentation independent of changing tempo and arrangement structures. The fact that beats can be re-arranged 'by the slice' has become one of my power tools in the creative process."
