BOSS celebrates 25th anniversary
BOSS,the division of Roland Corporation which produces effects pedals,rhythm machines,tuners,metronomes and most recently, personal digital studios,is celebrating its 25 th year in business.In 2001,the
company continues to push forward with a powerful new Twin Pedal Series for guitarists and bassists,the new ME-33 Guitar Multiple Effects,and the incredible SP-303 Dr.Sample —but these products should come as no surprise,considering BOSS ’ 25--year history of innovation.
In 1976,the CE-1 Chorus Ensemble pedal single-handedly catapulted the BOSS brand to the top of the guitar effects game,thanks to its unmistakable warm analog stereo chorus and vibrato sounds. Almost instantly,late ‘70s guitarists like Andy Summers made the CE-1 the effect pedal to have,and legions of guitarists and keyboardists followed suit. In 1977,BOSS introduced the now-legendary OD-1,the world ’s first compact overdrive pedal for guitarists.The rich,warm tones that this stompbox produced immediately set it apart from the harsh distortion pedals that had come before it,and further positioned BOSS as an effects innovator. Other BOSS “firsts ” throughout the years have included the first compact distortion, chorus, phaser, reverb and digital delay pedals, which revolutionized the effects pedal market with their durable construction,rubber pads on top and bottom, easy-access battery compartment and silent switching. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s,BOSS also offered musicians the first step-write programmable rhythm machine,the DR-55 Dr.Rhythm,as well as the first line of compact,battery-powered guitar tuners and metronomes,the TU-Series and Dr.Beat Series, respectively. These three product lines have gone through multiple updates and transformations over the years,establishing BOSS as the worldwide leader in not only guitar and bass effects,but tuners and metronomes as well.
BOSS ’ more recent innovations have included extremely popular ME--Series and GT-Series multi-effects processors,as well as the first Synth Bass and Intelligent Pitch Shifter pedals,which spawned a sea of imitators. In 1999,BOSS introduced its first recording product,the BR-8 Digital Recording Studio.Designed in BOSS ’ trademark “by guitarists,for guitarists ” fashion,,the easy-to-use 8-track BR-8 has since gone on to sell over 30,000 units in less than a year —another
tribute to the ongoing 25-year legacy that is BOSS.
